Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress is not against industrialisation, if it is done in a just manner and for genuine human development, party chief Mamata Banerjee said at Singur on Saturday, in her first public rally after the party’s victory in panchayat elections in Hooghly and East Midnapore districts.
She demanded back from the State government the 400 acres of agricultural land that she alleged was “forcibly taken away” from farmers to set up the Tata small car factory at Singur. She cautioned the government against an even wider-scale people’s movement if their demand is not met.
Ms. Banerjee asked the gram sabhas, panchayat samitis and zilla parishads not to decide on any land acquisition matter without consulting the party high command.
On the Gorkhaland issue, she alleged that the State government was inciting violence just like it had done at Singur and Nandigram as well as during the panchayat elections.
She paid tribute to all those killed during the elections and thanked everyone who had stood against the tyranny of the government to secure their democratic rights.
She requested the party members to maintain peace and unity in the face of this success, which, she said, is the first step in establishing justice in the State.
